Mexico Rental Phones

Not all cell phone plans in the United States (or Canada) allow you to roam to Mexico with your phone. In addition, some travelers prefer not to bring their current cellular phones to Mexico for a number of reasons, including simply not wanting customs to have access to your personal data or not wanting to have an expensive phone in their possession. Our iPhone rentals for Mexico offer unlimited data (up to 22GB at 4G/LTE speeds) as well as unlimited calls and texts, even to the United States.

Your rental includes a US cell phone number. If you need to retain your current number, simply forward your calls to the new phone number we will provide you with. You can access all of your apps and contacts by signing in to your Apple ID on the rental phone - just be sure to delete your ID before sending your rental phone back to Cellular Abroad. Please note that not all apps work with the iPhone4 but nearly all apps do work with the iPhone6.

Please note that if your trip is longer than 30 days, you will need to purchase an additional 30 day bundle of service for $79.95.


Ordering a Rental Phone is easy. Simply enter your departure and return dates into the calendar tool. You will pay $99.95 for the call time and data service regardless of the length of your trip (up to 30 days). You can begin to use the phone immediately after you receive the phone number - even in the US.

You can order online or speak to one of our expert advisors at 1-800-287-5072 and they can place the order for you. Time permitting, we deliver the Phone Rental 2 business days prior to you departure using USPS, UPS or FedEx. We can deliver the following day (except Sunday) for those with immediate departures. If you are ordering after 1:30 PST for next day delivery, please place your order via our toll free 800 number so that we can ensure that your order is promptly processed.


You will receive a fully charged Rental Phone, complete with a convenient travel pouch and international chargers and plug adapters and simple instructions. If you have any questions, please call us or email us.


Your Phone Rental will be activated the day that you request service to commence. You will receive instructions together with your rental.

Returning your Rental Phone

We will send you a prepaid return label with your package. Please retain it and, upon return from your trip, drop off the package at FedEx or USPS (as per instructions) within 2 business days from the last day of your rental period. Cellular Abroad will charge late fees at their own discretion if the return shipping date is later than 2 business days from the last day of your rental period. Important FAQs for Rentals

  • When do I order?
    You can order as far in advance as you like - even months prior to your departure. We will ship your rental at the appropriate date in order for you to receive it prior to your departure. Rentals are shipped ground or express service and will arrive 2 business days prior to your set departure date. Please note that we must have a 2 week window in order to ship ground.
  • How many minutes do I have?
    You have an unlimited amount of minutes to talk to any number within the USA or Mexico. You also have unlimited texting capabilities.
  • What can I do with Unlimited (up to 22GB of data) of data?
    In a word, a lot. Most people will not come close to using that much data.
  • What will this cost me?
    • The applicable rental period fee for the duration of your rental period.
    • $99.95 for initial talk-time/data voucher (1 per phone). If your trip exceeds 30 days, you will need another talk-time/credit voucher.
    • Round-trip shipping and handling fee (see below).
  • How much is shipping?
    If you order at least 2 weeks in advance, round-trip Ground shipping is only $12.88. If you are leaving soon, we offer round-trip 2-day Express for $29.96, or Overnight Express for $39.96. Rentals will arrive 2 business days prior to your set departure date.
  • What is the latest I can order a rental phone?
    You can order up to one business day prior to your departure as long as you call in before to 1:30pm Pacific Time. Exceptions can be made on a limited basis, even if you are leaving early in the morning - we can usually get your phone to you. Please call our 800 number (rather than order via the web) in order to confirm that we can get you a phone rental on time.
  • When do I get the phone?
    You will receive your cell phone rental at least two days prior to your departure, unless you require next day delivery.
  • Does the cell phone come charged?
    Yes it does, but it's always best to turn on the battery once you receive the rental and check to make sure it is fully charged.
  • Can I charge this phone on my trip?
    Yes, you will receive an international charger and relevant plug adapters, so you can charge the phone in the U.S. or at your destination.
  • How do I return the phone?
    Round trip shipping is included in your shipping fee. You will be provided with a return sticker label, which you can put on the box the phone arrived in, or your own box. If using your own box please do not use an extremely oversized box. (Canadian rental customers click here)
  • What happens if I cancel?
    If your rental has not shipped, you will only be charged a 5% reserve fee. If your rental has been sent out, you are responsible for the one week rental fee plus the shipping fee.
  • Are there any surcharges or hidden fees?
    Unless you are roaming outside of the country or countries for which your service is offered, the rates are fixed according to our posted rate chart and coverage areas. All rental customers are subject to our Terms & Conditions.
  • What will the rates be for people calling me from the US?
    They will pay whatever they usually pay when dialing a US based number.
  • How good is the service in Mexico?
    Cellular coverage is typically very good in Mexico but as a rule of thumb, wherever there are people and buildings, you will have coverage. The coverage is on Telcel which is the largest carrier in Mexico
