China SIM Card

Our China Mobile SIM card is a popular choice for travelers to China for a wide variety of reasons. Besides the fact that international roaming is very expensive AND data service with carriers such as Verizon, AT&T and others throttle (slow down) their data speeds, many travelers are not aware that even if you want to use Wi Fi in China, many places require you to receive a text message verification on a Chinese number. The SIM card we offer for China is indeed, a Chinese SIM card and hence, includes a Chinese number. In addition, buying a SIM card in China is not an easy experience. Oftentimes you will not get what you pay for and/or your SIM will be deactivated in a few days. And since you can only register one SIM per traveler, you would not be able to get another SIM even if you wanted to. The SIM you will receive from Cellular Abroad delivered to you prior to your trip has been specifically designed with the needs of the international traveler in mind including low international rates and ease of use. The mobile data rates and call rates, even for international calls, are a small fraction of what you would expect to pay through Verizon, Sprint, AT&T and other providers. The SIM card comes with 250 minutes in China or 125 to the US, Canada and Hong Kong or 500 local texts or 60 international texts (or a combination thereof), unlimited free incoming calls and 1GB of 4G, LTE data. You have the option of adding more data and/or more talk time. In addition, you can add a US phone number to the Chinese phone number that comes already on the SIM card. China Unicom is the only carrier in China that provides 4G data service. The service and coverage in China are excellent. The carrier is Unicom, the only 4G carrier in China. The 3-in-1 size fits in any phone or tablet and works on any unlocked device. Your call and data credit last for 90 days from the first use. Additional credit will extend the validity of the SIM card for an additional 90 days.

Please note that Chinese law (No. 25 decree issued by China Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) requires that all foreigners using a Chinese SIM card send a scanned copy of the photo page of their passport). When you receive your SIM card, we will include the email address where to send the scanned copy of your passport. Without this, your SIM card cannot be activated. Only one SIM can be activated per passport. If you need to activate 2 or more SIM cards, you CAN do so as a SIM can be activated to another party and used by you.

The China SIM card initially comes with 1 GB of 4G LTE data. Add additional data during checkout if you need more. You can add and additional 2GB or 5GB of data for a total of 3GB or 6GB of high speed LTE data on the China SIM card. Having mobile data is the perfect way to check your emails, browse the web and use such as WhatsApp, Skype, Google Maps and more. Tip: in China, some services such as YouTube, Facebook, Google Search and Gmail are blocked. We recommend you use our VPN app if you intend to use these services. Currently, other apps and websites such as Uber, Hotmail, Skype and others work fine.

US Phone Number Add-on

The SIM card comes with a Chinese cell phone number. While incoming calls are free, people calling a Chinese number would be charged international rates. US cell phone number makes it affordable for your contacts to reach you. You can also forward your current number to the new US number so that anyone who calls your usual number can reach you. The US number add-on is available during check out and is just $19 for 4 hours of call forwarding.

VPN Add-on

Many web sites including Google, Gmail and Google Maps plus news web sites as well as apps such as Instagram, Facebook, Skype, WhatsApp and Viber are blocked in China and will require you to use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) in order to access them. In addition, website security is a concern in China, particularly if you plan on doing online banking. A VPN allows you to create a secure connection over the internet and to access region restricted websites, of which there are many in China.

Cellular Abroad offers a Chinese government approved VPN that you can add to your China SIM card for just $29 (available during checkout). We will email you the password information and VPN instructions within 24 hours after receiving a copy of your passport (which is required by Chinese law in order to activate your SIM card) as per the instructions provided with the SIM card.

Using translation apps, location apps, researching restaurants, and sharing your through apps such as Instagram and Facebook a great way to use your smartphone not just as a smartphone phone but as a travel resource). Apps such as WeChat (the Chinese version of WhatsApp) and iMessage allow you to talk for hours while using minute amounts of LTE data.

Phone Rentals

Due to security concerns, approximately 90% of our customers needing cellular service in China do not want to use their primary personal phones. We recommend that you use our China SIM card with a secondary cell phone that has been wiped of all your personal data. If you do not have a secondary cell phone or would like to learn about our cell phone rental options for China, please visit our China Cell Phone Rental section.

You can order additional recharges together with the order of your SIM card or during your trip. Please allow up to 24 hours for the credit to be applied if you order additional call credit during your trip.

I purchased this sim card when my daughter traveled to China and Hong Kong. The card was placed in an old unlocked Motorola KRZR cell phone. The phone worked perfectly with the card. You must watch the fees when calling from Hong Kong to US as it is fairly expensive. If you call US to Hong Kong there is no charge on the sim card. I highly recommend using the card if you're traveling to Hong Kong and China.

This was my 2nd business trip to China using one of these sim cards. Used it in a Samsung a737 purchased off of [@]. I used it for local calls and texts as well as calls home to the US. I've used it in Shanghai, Xi'an, Changsha and Hangzhou without any problem.

It was so nice to have a phone with a working SIM card as soon as I arrived in China. I did a lot of research online before I left about the best plans. CellularAbroad definitely offered the least expensive plan and I had great coverage all over China. The instructions that Cellular Abroad provided about using the SIM card in China were not completely correct and I ended up being overcharged slightly, but I contacted the company via email while I was in China and they were very helpful and prompt in getting the problem fixed; I was reimbursed without any issues. It was great to have support service in English. I would definitely recommend using Cellular Abroad for purchasing a SIM card.

Great product to use in china and hong kong. The rates for international dialing are cheaper than the local sim cards available here. In addition, the fill up cards are very easy to find.

China SIM card FAQs

Will the SIM card work with my phone?

As long as your phone is unlocked it will work. If your phone is not a smartphone, please make sure that it has the 900/1800 GSM bands.

How do I know if my phone is unlocked?

You cannot tell physically if your cell phone is unlocked. New Verizon phones come locked but are automatically unlocked after 60 days. If you are with AT&T and you put a different SIM card (such as T-Mobile) in and it picks up a network, it is unlocked. Conversely, if you put another SIM card in and it says, "enter subsidy code" or similar, it is locked. Call your carrier to check to see if your phone is unlocked or if it qualifies for being unlocked as policies do change.

Do you offer micro and nano SIM cards?

Yes, your SIM card is a 3-1 SIM and will fit any phone.

Can I tether?

Yes, you can tether (use your phone as a hotspot).

Why don't I just purchase a SIM card when I get to China?

There are many different types of SIM cards in China - some good for local calls, some just for texting, some for other purposes and virtually none work throughout China with no roaming. Unless you speak the language, good luck figuring out what you are getting. Plus, most people do not want to go through the wait and hassle of filling out documentation and providing passport details after a long flight. Our SIM card will work as soon as you hit the tarmac.

How good is the coverage?

In a word; excellent. As a rule of thumb, as long as there are roads that are traveled on and houses where people live, there is coverage. Of course, that doesn't always mean that there is coverage every where and all the time. Still, most travelers are surprised at how extensive the coverage typically is.

Is there voicemail?

There is no voicemail at this time.

I have heard that Gmail and other websites and apps do not work. Is this true?

Yes it is true. We recommend that you use a VPN app in order to get around this.

If I add-on the US phone number, will people be able to reach me when I am in China?

Yes, they will be able to reach you while in China. Typically, you will give locals the Chinese number and people back home the US number. You can also forward your current number to the new US number so that all your contacts can reach you buy calling the usual number. Please be aware that due to the time difference, unless your phone is on silent, you may be woken up in the middle of the night!

Where can I get more talk time or data?

You can get additional call credit through Cellular Abroad. Also, you can only get up to 6 GB of data per 30 day period.

Will it work as soon as I land in China?

Does it work outside of China?

It will work all over the world but roaming rates are expensive!

How much will it cost people in the USA/Canada to call me on my China number?

That depends on their plan. A great option is to add the "US Number" feature to your service.

Can I keep my usual number?

Yes you can. Purchase the US Number add on and forward your current number to the new one (ask your carrier what the procedure is). This is ideal for business travelers who need to be reached at all times but is also a double edged sword for travelers going for a bit of rest and relaxation as anyone who calls your usual number will reach you. Another option is just to give a select few your new US number.

Can I use the SIM card next year when I go to China?

Your SIM expires after 90 days from the date of activation.
