Prepaid (Pay as you go) International WiFi See our rates and packages below

There are several types of prepaid international wifi, but when most people think of prepaid international wifi they think of the wifi that can be typically found in hotels (the ability to access a wifi network for a certain amount of time for a certain price.) For example, the Waldorf Astoria in New York charges $15.95 for 24 hours of wifi access. Internationally, rates may vary along with availability and reliability. It is wise to check prior to your departure in regard to availability, costs and reliability. Still, even if you have determined that you will have reliable wifi access, being bound to your room or the hotel lobby doesn’t appeal to most people, particularly if you are relying on the internet for maps, restaurant ratings, etc. A better solution is to rent or purchase a device that gives you mobile access to the internet anywhere and at any time, and often for less than what a hotel charges.

Obtaining prepaid wifi for your international trip by using a mobile hotspot or MiFi device is a great solution to the problem of locating a reliable WiFi source. Novatel created the first version of this ingenious device and dubbed it the "MiFi", and since then, even different models from other companies are often referred to as MiFi devices. This is similar to how most people refer to facial tissues simply as Kleenex, even if they are not using the specific brand. In any event, whether you call it a MiFi or a mobile hotspot, they all do more or less the same thing, which is to create a personal and portable hotspot.

The MiFi by itself does not provide an internet connection, but when coupled with the proper international data SIM it becomes a potent and indispensable communication tool. With the proper international data plan on your SIM, the MiFi creates a hotspot that can be accessed by any device capable of using a wifi signal (including but not limited to iPhones, iPads, Macs, PCs, e-book readers like Amazon’s Kindle or Barnes and Noble’s Nook, as well as smart phones and Blackberrys.) Simply log on as you would to any wifi network, enter the password (if password protected) and you are ready to go. Up to five devices can simultaneously use the mobile hotspot and, since it works off of the same towers that cell phones use, any place where you get cell phone coverage will also let you access the internet. The MiFi is roughly the size of a small cell phone and can be used while plugged into an outlet or while roaming around using the battery. Due to its dimensions, you can easily put it in a pocket, purse or backpack. The MiFi has a standby time of a couple of days and if it is being used, the battery will last for a few hours between charges.

As mentioned previously, using the MiFi requires an international data SIM card to connect to the local network. Cellular Abroad offers several country specific solutions as well as a multi-country solution for Europe. One of our more popular MiFi devices is the European MiFi that is currently available only for rentals; this rental offers unlimited data in 24 European countries including Russia and few other Eastern European destinations. 3G speed is available for up to 500 MB, after which the speed will drop 2G service (which is fine for emails and light browsing but not suitable for streaming.)
