Please be sure to read these instructions prior to departing for Peru. If you're consulting your phone's user guide, please defer to the instructions below with regard to the use of your Peru SIM card. (Phone manuals are written in general terms.) |
 |
Requirements: A GSM cellular phone with no service-provider lock. If you are unsure whether your phone is locked or not, test it with a SIM card from a service provider other than your own. The phone must be capable of functioning in the 1900 MHz GSM band. (More bands are ok.)
Your Peru SIM Card Cell Phone Number: Your 9-digit cellular phone number for Peru is displayed on the outside of your Prepaid Peru SIM Card package under the barcode at the bottom left. The country code for Peru is 51. Your phone number will be based in Lima, so all calls made in the Central region are considered local calls. This would include calls made in the areas of Huanuco, Pasco, Junin, Huancavelica, Ica and Ayacucho. When traveling to other areas, local calls are at a local rate and calls back to the Lima area and other outlying areas are at the LDN (Larga Distancia Nacionalnational long distance) rate.
Dialing information
In order for others to call to your Peru cell phone number from the USA, the correct sequence is 011-51, then the Peru cell phone number (ex. 011-51-197123456). Please be sure to inform anyone who has your Peru cell phone number as to the proper dialing sequence in order to ensure you receive your calls.
To call the U.S., dial 00 then 1 (U.S. country code) + the area code and phone number.
Important: Most US toll free numbers are not accessable from overseas. Be sure to get valid international numbers prior to your departure.
Features:
- A Peru pre-paid SIM card and cell phone number-you'll have the number before you depart
- Complete with initial airtime worth about $1.50 + about 105 minutes of calling to another TIM phone.
- Unlimited FREE incoming calls from anywhere (in the Lima area)
- Domestic rates as low as $0.42 per minute
- Calls back to the US and Canada as little as $0.43 per minute.
- Add more call credits as needed by purchasing easily-obtainable recharge voucher cards in various denominations
- Voicemail, Caller ID, call-waiting, GPRS
- No yearly contract, monthly charges, daily minimum charges, minimum minutes per call charges or credit checks
Preparing Your Phone for use overseas:
While you won't be able to use your SIM card until you get to Peru, there are a few things you can do to test your equipment and prep your phone.
- Test that your phone charger works well with your phone and make sure your phone's battery can take and hold a charge. (All Cellular Abroad phones come with variable-voltage chargers.)
- If you are supplying your own phone, make sure you have the phone menus specifically set to use English (as opposed to the "automatic" setting.) Consult your phone manual if you don't know where the language setting is.
- Snap out the SIM chip from the SIM card and insert the chip into your GSM Phone's SIM card slot with the metal portion facing down as to make contact with the contact prongs. (You'll usually find your phone's SIM card slot underneath the battery of your GSM cell phone. Consult your phone manual if unsure of the proper installation procedure.)
- Turn on your phone and—if prompted—enter the 4-digit PIN1 code included in your packaging. The PIN1 code is found under the scratch-off protective coating on your SIM card.
- We strongly suggest you turn off the PIN-check feature if you are prompted for a PIN number every time your phone is turned on. Again, consult your phone manual for how to do this. (Hint: Look under "security", "PIN", or "SIM" section of your manual's index.)
Activating Your Service:
- Go to Peru
- Be sure that battery is charged
- Turn on your phone
- You may start calling
- Note: All spoken prompts are in Spanish
Adding Talk Time: Additional call credit can be added by purchasing TIM recharge cards. These "TIMcarga" cards are sold in denominations of S/.10, S/.20, S/.30, S/.40, S/.60, S/.120 at "Mundos y Planetas TIM" stores, supermarkets, drugstores, magazine kiosks and any convenience store displaying the TIM logo. You can also call TIM customer service for information on other locations or ways to add credit. Even if you have zero credit - since incoming calls are always free - you will still be able to receive calls. Once you have purchased a recharge card, simply follow these easy instructions:
- Simply scratch off the protective coating on the back of the card to reveal your voucher code
- Dial *777 from your own mobile phone
- Follow the instructions you hear to enter the code number
- Upon successful entry of the code, your account will be credited and you'll receive a confirmation of your new available balance.
Spanish-speaking users can also go online at http://www.tim.com.pe and add recharge their accounts in the Prepago section with a VISA card. VISA card users can also recharge from their phone by dialing *22 and following instrutions. You can add more talk time from as little as S/. 20. You can receive up to 15% bonus time for recharges of S/. 100 to 250.
Calling Rates:
Rates are based on per-minute charges. Calls are billed in per-second increments. Peru uses the Nuevo Sol (PEN) currency, sometimes written as "S/." before the amount. 1 PEN = to about $0.31 USD. For up-to-date currency exchange rates, use the Currency Converter.
TIMdestino rates apply to local calls. LDN (Larga Distancia Nacional) is for calling outside the local area. If traveling outside the Lima area with another person using a Lima cell phone number, you will be billed at the LDN rates. Prices include 19% IGV tax. In order to make long-distance calls, you must have at least S/.7.50 credit in your prepaid account.
