OUT OF STOCK. An Alternative Option
Great Alternate Solution: While not a Peruvian phone number, the Talk Abroad™ SIM card offers prepaid cellular service in Peru and dozens of other countries.
A Peru Prepaid SIM Card, in conjunction with the correct GSM cell phone, allows you to have a Peruvian cell phone number and to take advantage of the low rates that the locals pay - and all without a cellular contract. The rates are extremely advantageous and even include unlimited FREE incoming calls from anywhere in the world. The SIM card or chip is the brain of the phone and is what allows you to make calls within Peru and internationally. The card is prepaid so that you will never receive a phone bill and will always be in complete control of your expenditures. If needed, you can simply add more talk time to the card by purchasing scratch off recharge cards and entering in the recharge code on the handset. And since incoming calls are always free, even if you have depleted your credit you can still receive incoming calls from anywhere in the world.
The SIM card slips easily into the phone and if needed, you can purchase other SIM cards as well for other countries to where you may be traveling. We also offer international SIM cards that are convenient for travel to multiple countries.
We offer a wide assortment of GSM cell phones for purchase and you can use any of our GSM phones in conjunction with the SIM cards we offer. However, for added convenience and savings we recommend our package deal of a cell phone and Peru SIM card. This package is popular with our customers and the phone will also work in over 200 other countries (including the US with one of the many carriers using the GSM system). Once you have the appropriate phone, it's easy and inexpensive to purchase and use a SIM card for the next country to which you will travel.

Your Peru SIM Card Cell Phone Number: Your 9-digit cellular phone number for Peru is displayed on the outside of your Prepaid Peru SIM Card package under the barcode at the bottom left. The country code for Peru is 51. Your phone number will be based in Lima, so all calls made in the Central region are considered local calls. This would include calls made in the areas of Huanuco, Pasco, Junin, Huancavelica, Ica and Ayacucho. When traveling to other areas, local calls are at a local rate and calls back to the Lima area are at the LDN (larga distancia nacional—national long distance) rate.
Preparing Your Phone for use overseas:
While you won't be able to use your SIM card until you get to Peru, there are a few things you can do to test your equipment and prep your phone.
- Test that your phone charger works well with your phone and make sure your phone's battery can take and hold a charge.
- If you are supplying your own phone, make sure you have the phone menus specifically set to use English (as opposed to the "automatic" setting.) Consult your phone manual if you don't know where the language setting is.
- Snap out the SIM chip from the SIM card and insert the chip into your GSM Phone's SIM card slot with the metal portion facing down as to make contact with the contact prongs. (You'll usually find your phone's SIM card slot underneath the battery of your GSM cell phone. Consult your phone manual if unsure of the proper installation procedure.)
- Turn on your phone and—if prompted—enter the 4-digit PIN1 code included in your packaging. The PIN1 code is found under the scratch-off protective coating on your SIM card.
- We strongly suggest you turn off the PIN-check feature if you are prompted for a PIN number every time your phone is turned on. Again, consult your phone manual for how to do this. (Hint: Look under "security", "PIN", or "SIM" section of your manual's index.)
Activating Your Service:
- Go to Peru
- Be sure that battery is charged
- Turn on your phone
- You may start calling
- Note: All spoken prompts are in Spanish
Adding Talk Time: Additional call credit can be added by purchasing TIM recharge cards. These "TIMcarga" cards are sold in denominations of S/.10, S/.20, S/.30, S/.40, S/.60, S/.120 at "Mundos y Planetas TIM" stores, supermarkets, drugstores, magazine kiosks and any convenience store displaying the TIM logo. You can also call TIM customer service for information on other locations or ways to add credit. Even if you have zero credit - since incoming calls are always free - you will still be able to receive calls. Once you have purchased a recharge card, simply follow these easy instructions:
- Simply scratch off the protective coating on the back of the card to reveal your voucher code
- Dial *777 from your own mobile phone
- Follow the instructions you hear to enter the code number
- Upon successful entry of the code, your account will be credited and you'll receive a confirmation of your new available balance.
Spanish-speaking users can also go online at http://www.tim.com.pe and add recharge their accounts in the Prepago section with a VISA card. VISA card users can also recharge from their phone by dialing *22 and following instrutions. You can add more talk time from as little as S/. 20. You can receive up to 15% bonus time for recharges of S/. 100 to 250.
Calling Rates:
Rates are based on per-minute charges. Calls are billed in per-second increments. Peru uses the Nuevo Sol (PEN) currency, sometimes written as "S/." before the amount. 1 PEN = to about $0.31 USD. For up-to-date currency exchange rates, use the Currency Converter.
TIMdestino rates apply to local calls. LDN (Larga Distancia Nacional) is for calling outside the local area. If traveling outside the Lima area with another person using a Lima cell phone number, you will be billed at the LDN rates. Prices include 19% IGV tax. In order to make long-distance calls, you must have at least S/.7.50 credit in your prepaid account.
