We are happy to have Michael Shapiro help judge our annual event. Michael's unique background will inevitably influence his decision when helping to chose our winners.
Michael's pedigree includes a year working for CNET, an online tech guide, freelancing for The Los Angeles Times and The San Francisco Chronicle, several national magazines as well as appearances on PBS and CNN. Michael's work has exposed him to an array of remarkably adventurous situations. He has biked through Cuba and floated down the Mekong River on a Laotian cargo barge. One of his more recent accomplishments is a travel book entitled, "A Sense of Place: Great Travel Writers Talk About Their Lives, Craft and Inspiration". It will be published in September of 2004 and includes interviews with Bill Bryson, Frances Mayes, Paul Theroux, Peter Matthiessen, Tim Cahill, Jan Morris, Pico Iyer, Isabel Allende, and Simon Winchester and many others.
