The National Geographic Talk Abroad 'Lite' Phone

Cellular Abroad rents and sells to Canadian customers

International cellular service, particularly for Canadians, is particularly expensive. In fact, international rates with Rogers, the largest carrier in Canada, start at $2 per minute for calls in or out – plus tax. Roaming rates for Roger’s pay as you go service starts at $2.50 per minute. With these rates, communication threatens to be the most expensive part of your trip! Cellular Abroad’s mission is to make international cellular service affordable for all travelers – not just the wealthiest. In fact, the vast majority of the countries that we provide service for offer unlimited free incoming calls as well as affordable outgoing rates. Our plans are pay as you go so you do not need to sign a contract or worry about how much you will spend.

There are several solutions available, depending on your needs.

Purchase an International SIM Card

If your phone works internationally (is a quad band GSM cell phone), you have the potential to purchase a stand alone SIM card. However, please note that all Canadian carriers lock their handsets meaning that you cannot simply swap out their SIM card for a different one. Carriers “lock” cell phones to their own network because they would prefer that you use their service – at their rates – while traveling. You CAN get your handset unlocked. Many cell phone stores in Canada will unlock your handset for a fee and there are also many online services offering this service.

There are two types of SIM cards – country specific SIM cards and the National Geographic Travel SIM. If you are only traveling to one country, it makes sense to purchase a country specific SIM card as the rates are generally lower and you will have a local number. In some instances, such as the UK, the rates are phenomenally low (about $0.06 per minute to call back to Canada) and unlimited free incoming calls. If you are traveling to 2 or more countries, you should consider the National Geographic Travel SIM that works in over 200 countries with free incoming calls in over 75.

Rent an International Cell Phone

If you cannot get your phone unlocked or it is not compatible for overseas use, you can rent a cell phone from Cellular Abroad. This is the same service as purchasing a stand alone SIM card, only we also provide a cell phone to use it with.

Purchase an International Cell Phone

If you are a frequent traveler, it makes sense to purchase a SIM/phone combination. We have several to choose from. Our international GSM phones are unlocked and work in all countries where there is GSM service. You can purchase a country specific solution for use in one country or the National Geographic Travel Phone which works in over 200 countries.

Choosing the right solution for your particular needs may be confusing. Please call Cellular Abroad for any of your questions so that we can provide you information specifically geared toward your individual needs!
