Your Canada SIM Card Cell Phone Number:
You must call Rogers customer service to activate your prepaid service and obtain your Canadian phone number. From the US, dial 1 866-594-9456. You will need to indicate your preferred area code to the customer service rep when you call to activate the card.

Preparing Your Phone:
While you won't be able to use your SIM card until you get to Canada, there are a few things you can do to test your equipment and prep your phone.

  1. Test that your phone charger works well with your phone and make sure your phone's battery can take and hold a charge. (All Cellular Abroad phones come with variable-voltage chargers.)
  2. If you are supplying your own phone, make sure you have the phone menus specifically set to use English (as opposed to the "automatic" setting.) Consult your phone manual if you don't know where the language setting is.
  3. Turn off your phone and remove the battery cover and the battery from the back of the phone. Locate the SIM compartment on the back of the phone. (Almost–but not all–phones store SIM chips under the batteries.)
  4. Carefully remove the SIM card from its holder. To prevent damage to your SIM card and its memory, do not bend, scratch or expose it to static, electricity or magnetic fields.
  5. Depending on your cellular phone model, either slide the SIM door to the left and lift to open or press down slightly the edge of the lever marked “PRESS”.
  6. The SIM compartment on the phone is shaped to fit the SIM card, therefore when placing the SIM card inside make sure that both slanted corners on the card and on the phone are matching. The square metallic piece of the card should be facing down.
  7. Once the SIM card is in, close the SIM door and slide to the right to lock (dependant on cellular phone model). Replace the battery and turn on the phone. You are ready to go.

Note: Instructions may vary per phone model. Refer to your manufacturer’s guide for more information.

Activating your service:

In order to make and/or receive calls while traveling, you will need to activate your SIM Card. To activate your account, email our distributor the following information:

  • Your full name
  • The city you are traveling to within Canada
  • Your contact email
  • Your 20 digit SIM number of the chip you received (located on the back)
  • Departure Date

Once this information is received, your account will be activated with a mobile number for the city you are traveling to. Your default calling plan will be the Anytime Plan. Although the registration will typically take 24 hours from receipt of your email, please allow for 48-hour turn around just to be safe.

Adding Talk Time:
You can top up your phone by purchasing a Rogers Wireless Prepaid voucher at convenience stores, gas bars and other retailers across Canada. Top Up vouchers are available in $10, $20, $30 and $40 denominations and expire 30 days from activation. There's also a $100 voucher that offers a full 365 days worth of service. This is very popular with folks who can only get up to Canada once a year.

Autosaver
Enjoy the most convenient top-up method ever! - Money is added directly to your account every month automatically from your credit card. Never worry about your airtime expiring. With a valid credit card and a successful top-up, any unused airtime will be carried forward to the next month.

For a minimum of $20 per month, Auto Saver option offers a savings of 20% off your local calling rates. Just enroll in automatic monthly credit card top ups to start saving.

You'll find more detailed information in your Rogers booklet accompanying your SIM card. Note that the Pay As You Go calling card service ended May 1, 2006. (Doubtful that this would have been much use to Cellular Abroad customers, but we thought it worth mentioning.)

Customer Service:
Customer service for your Canada prepaid SIM card is available 24 hr./day at *611. You can call for Pay As You Go self-assistance at 1-800-575-9090. Pay As You Go Activations, call 1-866-594-9456. (This is a live operator.)

Service Life:
If you do not recharge your account within 6 months, any remaining airtime credit will be forfeit. To get connected again you will need to top-up your prepaid account. If you should leave your account dormant for 6 months with no activity at all, you will not be able to revive the account. The 6 month period starts the day you activate in Canada.

Multi-Country Travel
You can also purchase other SIM cards as well for other countries to where you may be traveling. (This option is good for those planning on doing a lot of local calling.) We also offer an international roaming Talk Abroad™ SIM Card that is convenient for travel to multiple countries. (This option is useful for those wanting a single number for use in multiple countries and who will be making more calls back home than locally.)
