Rental Setup
- Make sure your phone is charged before you leave and your menu settings are in English.
- See Activating your service below
For SIM Card Only Purchases
Snap out the SIM chip from the SIM card and insert the chip into your GSM Phone with the metal portion facing down as to make contact with the contact prongs.
- Make sure the phone is charged and the menu settings are in English.
- If prompted for a PIN number, your default PIN is "0000". To disable PIN-check at startup, consult your phone's user guide.
PIN and PUK codes
The PIN (Personal Identification Number) code prevents unauthorized access to the SIM card in your phone. If you enter the PIN code incorrectly 3 times in a row, the SIM card will be blocked. To un-block the SIM card, you will need to enter the PUK (Personal Unlock Key) code. Please consult your manual for how to disable the PIN-check feature.
Activating Your Service
Your Australian Service will not work until you have activated the SIM and are in Australia. You must contact the Australian customer service from another line to activate you phone.
You will need to provide the serial number and SIM card control number from the Optus SIM card package. You will also need to supply the customer service agent with your name and an Australian address to complete the registration process.
- From a US or Canada landline, you can call customer support at 011-61 2 9342 5678 (make sure to ask for the activations department).
- If you wait until you're in Australia, you can call customer service at 1300 555 002. You can only activate from another phone and not with the product itself.
Voicemail
To activate all you need to do is call 1300 555 002 <Talk/Send> and a Customer Service Representative will activate it for you.
Checking Your Credit
You can check your account balance anytime, all you have to do is:
- Dial 555 <Talk/Send>, (this is a free call) from your mobile phone anytime.
- Follow voice instructions and press 1 for your service balance and expiry date.
- End the call.
Purchasing More Talk Time
The easiest way to purchase more talk time is by calling Cellular Abroad +1 310-862-7100 (24/7 English speaking reps) before as well as during your trip. The recharge card is the "Optus Pre-Paid Mobile Recharge Card". Or you can find them at over 6000 outlets including convenience stores and gas stations in Australia.
Convenient Tip: Sign up for the TurboCharge service plan! You receive $120 of credit for every $30 recharge when you're on this plan. Also international calls will be 0.29 instead of 0.37 per minute after you switch to the TurboCharge plan. Call Optus customer service by dialing 1300 555 002 <Talk/Send> for more information and to switch to this special calling plan. There is a $0.27 AUD fee (the connection fee) for all calls to Optus customer service.
Adding More Talk Time
Even if you have zero credit, since incoming calls are always free, you will still be able to receive calls. To add more talk time:
- Scratch off the scratch-off area to expose the 10 digit PIN
- Dial 555 <Talk/Send>, (this is a free call) from your mobile phone anytime
- Follow the voice instructions to enter your PIN number.
