Your Australia SIM Card Cell Phone Number:
Your cellular phone number for Australia can be easily obtained before you arrive in Australia. From the US or Canada, you can call customer support at 011-61 2 9342 5678. You will need to provide the serial number and SIM card control number from the Optus SIM card package. You will also need to supply the customer service agent with your name and an Australian address to complete the registration process. Customer service is very friendly and since you're on the phone with them, you can ask about recharge locations or any other aspect of the service for which you'd like more information. If you would prefer to wait till you're in Australia, you can call customer service at 1300 555 002.

Preparing Your Phone for use overseas:
While you won't be able to use your SIM card until you get to Australia, there are a few things you can do to test your equipment and prep your phone.

  • Test that your phone charger works well with your phone and make sure your phone's battery can take and hold a charge. (All Cellular Abroad phones come with variable-voltage chargers.)
  • Snap out the SIM chip from the SIM card and insert the chip into your GSM Phone with the metal portion facing down as to make contact with the contact prongs. (You'll usually find your phone's SIM card slot underneath the battery of your GSM cell phone. Consult your phone manual if unsure of the proper installation procedure.)
  • Turn on your phone and familiarize yourself with the menus. If prompted for a PIN number, your default PIN is "0000". To disable PIN-check at startup, consult your phone's user guide.

Activating Your Service:
If you've already retrieved your number, your SIM card and prepaid account are already activated. Here's another way to activate your service if you want to avoid a long-distance call to Optus customer support in Australia:

  • Go to Australia
  • Dial 555 from your mobile phone. This first-time call to this number will automatically switch you over to customer service.
  • Give the operator the 10-digit activation number that you will also find in your SIM package.
  • They will get your information and register you and they will supply you with your phone number.
  • You may start calling

Checking Your Credit:
You can check your account balance anytime, all you have to do is:

  • Dial 555, (this is a free call) from your mobile phone anytime.
  • Follow voice instructions and press 1 for your service balance and expiry date.
  • End the call.

Recharging Your SIM Card:
To add more talk time to your prepaid account, you will need to purchase an "Optus Pre-Paid Mobile Recharge Card". These may be purchased from Cellular Abroad (see below) or they can be found in denominations of 30, 50 and 100 Australian Dollars at over 6000 outlets including convenience stores and gas stations. Even if you have zero credit, since incoming calls are always free, you will still be able to receive calls

Australia Optus Prepaid Recharge Card
only US$39.00 for $30AUD of talk time credit

Save time by starting your stay in the Australia with an additional $30AUD of talk time. Each of these recharges gives about 98 minutes of calls to the US or Canada or about 46 minutes in Australia. Incoming calls are free while at your destination.

As soon as you arrive in Australia, simply scratch off the protective panel, follow our instructions to enter the code number and your credit is applied. Knowing what the recharge cards look like and how to apply the credit, you're one step ahead and loaded with call credit.

Convenient Tip: You can purchase additional recharge codes (from our Optus recharge cards) via phone whenever you need to add more call credits to your prepaid account. No need to ship you a card!
