Argentina (Telecom Personal) SIM Card Instructions

Please be sure to read these instructions prior to departing for Argentina.

If you experience any technical difficulties with your phone or SIM card and you do not contact Cellular Abroad for technical support by phone or by email during your trip, we cannot offer any refund or compensation.

Dialing information

Your phone needs to be an unlocked dual-band, tri-band or quad-band GSM phone capable of functioning on the 900 MHz GSM band in order to accept the SIM card.

Your Argentina Cell to US: 001 – area code – phone number
US to Argentina Cell: 011 – 54 – 9 – area code – phone number

Important: Most US toll free numbers are not accessable from overseas. Be sure to get valid international numbers prior to your departure.

Please Note: There is no support for service when roaming outside of Argentina

Rental / Phone Purchase Setup

  • Your SIM card has been installed
  • Make sure the battery is charged and the menu settings are in English.
  • The PIN-check feature is disabled by default.
  • You must add the included initial credit voucher once you arrive in Argentina.
  • See activating your service below

SIM Purchases Only Setup

  • Snap out the SIM chip from the SIM card and insert the chip into your GSM Phone with the metal portion facing down as to make contact with the contact prongs.
  • If the menu settings do not appear in English consult your phone manual to change the language setting
  • You must add the included initial credit voucher once you arrive in Argentina
  • See activating your service below

Activating your service

  • Once in Argentina scratch off the protective coating on the back of the included voucher card to reveal your voucher code
  • From your handset, dial *151 and press the send key (prompts are only available in Spanish)
  • Follow the instructions you hear to enter the code number
  • Upon successful entry of the code, your account will be credited and you'll receive a confirmation of your new available balance.
  • Your phone is active you may start calling
  • All spoken prompts are in Spanish

Voicemail

  • Dial *555 from your cell phone.
  • You can also access your voicemail box by dialing 9799-0131 from a landline. All spoken prompts are in Spanish.

Upon entering the system, enter your voicemail password. Your initial password will be the last 4 digits of your phone number.  You can change the password by calling *25283 from your handset. To access voicemail from another phone, call your phone number and then press # when the system answers your call. Then, enter your voicemail password. Voicemail is always active. It is not possible to disable it.

  • 1 To hear messages
  • 7-7 Erase a message
  • 3-3 Advance to the end of a message
  • 1-1 Go back to the beginning of a message
  • 9 To save a message
  • 7 To erase a message
  • 5 To get message information

You may personalize your outgoing message by following the spoken (Spanish) prompts in the voicemail system menu.
Checking your Credit

  • Call *150 <Send> (free of charge)
  • You will be given your current balance.
  • Alternately, you can send an SMS message to 150 and type "saldo"
  • You will shortly get a message stating your current balance.
  • When your balance is below $5 pesos and/or below $3 pesos, you will get an SMS message alerting you that you are low on talk-time credit.

Purchasing Talk Time
The easiest way to purchase recharge cards is to call Cellular Abroad (8am to 4pm PST, Monday through Saturday, English speaking reps) before and during your trip abroad.  We only carry the Argentina Prepaid Recharge Voucherfor 20 Pesos of talk time credit for only US$14.00.

"Tarjetas Personal Light" cards are sold in denominations of 10, 20, or 50 pesos at "Telecom Personal" stores, Musimundo, Fravega, Garbarino, or Falabella stores and in supermarkets, drugstores, magazine kiosks and any convenience store displaying the Personal logo..

Adding Talk Time
You can call Telecom Personal customer service for information to add credit or find other locations to purchase recharge cards. Even if you have zero credit - since incoming calls are always free - you will still be able to receive calls. Once you have purchased a recharge card, simply follow these easy instructions:

  1. Scratch off the protective coating on the back of the card to reveal your voucher code
  2. From your handset, dial *151 and press the <Send> key (prompts are in Spanish only)
  3. Follow the instructions you hear to enter the code number
  4. Upon successful entry of the code, your account will be credited and you'll receive a confirmation of your new available balance.
  5. Alternately, you can send the voucher code purchased via SMS to 151 with word "REC" followed by the voucher number.

Troubleshooting
If you are unable to make or receive calls switch networks on your phone.  Consult your phone’s manual.  The steps will be like these:

  • Menu > Settings/Setup > Network > Available Network/Change Network > Search
  • Select a different network carrier than the one currently shown.

If you are receiving no reception bars, emergency calls only, SOS, or no service
check your phones band setting:  Consult your phone’s manual. The steps will be like these:

  • Menu > Settings/Setup > Network > Network Setup >Band
  • Make sure you select 850/1900

Customer Service
For network or service issues:

  • Customer service is available 24/7 by dialing *111 at any time from your Argentina cellular phone.
  • From a landline, dial toll free at 0800 444 0800.
  • Internationally, you can reach them at + 54 11 4706 6962. After a recording and usually a short wait, you will speak to a friendly live operator. Many, but not all, know English.

Calling Rates
Calls are billed in per-second increments. Argentina uses the Argentine Peso (ARS) currency. Rates are based on per-minute charges and given in pesos with US dollar approximations given afterward. For up-to-date currency exchange rates, use the Currency Converter at www.cellularabroad.com.

If a person is calling from a public phone or using a calling card you will be charged 0.89/pesos min for the incoming call.

Text message rates
SMS messages are free to receive. They cost $0.17 (~$0.06 USD) to send a domestic SMS (or SMS to email).  Family, friends and colleagues can send you SMS messages via the web. Have them go to http://sms.personal.com.ar/Mensajes/msn.htm to send the messages.

Service Life
Adding call credit to the SIM will give an additional eight months of service.  If the SIM is not reloaded at least once every 8 months then the SIM card and accompanying phone number will expire.
To inquire about the possibility of extending your SIM card’s service life while outside the SIM card’s country of origin contact the telecom provider's customer service, Cellular Abroad does not provide support for this feature.
